We will have donuts and orange juice for the kids around 8:00 am. Then around 9:00 am the kids will help gather the horses and began grooming and learn to saddle once all the kids have arrived.
We will start in the round pen to give every child a chance to ride one on one to see what there level of riding is. Your child will practice mounting and dismounting. This will be a controlled ride with the horse attached to a lung line in the round pen. I will work with each child to see how well they balance themselves at a walk or trot. The kids will be evaluated and put into groups according to there riding ability. This way they will learn at a pace they can handle and still make it fun for the whole group and each child.
Then by 10:00 am we will move into a small arena and work on seeing how well each child does one on one while all the kids watch. I like to have the kids ride each horse to find a good match for the horses show at the end of the week. I will have obstacles that they will follow, go around, practice turning the horse, and learning to stop properly and back up the horse while under saddle. The kids will learn certain gymkhana events courses.
We will have a total of 5 events that we will work on the whole week for the Friday Show., Western Pleasure, ( walk, trott and canter) , Key Hole , Pole bending-Single Pole -Barrels & Flag race.
Around 11:30 the kids will get ready for lunch. They will help put the horses in a holding pen. The kids will be assigned to horse to learn to care for them as a group. They will be responsible for cleaning that area. The horses will be giving hay / treats & water. The kids will watch horse related movies while eating lunch. They will also go over parts of a horse, learn different breeds, parts of a saddle ect...Then afterand during lunch the kids will make a craft project daily. Every craft project will be horse related.
Some of the Arts and Crafts projects the kids will make:
Horse Stable Frame, Toilet Paper Horse, Horse Bookmark, Horse Perler Beads
We will have other horse related activities.
We find the hours between 12:00 and 2:00 pm is the hottest part of the day.
So we try to keep the kids inside making crafts or involved them in water activities.
If we get a small pool the kids will swim for 45 minutes , starting around 1:15
or they will learn how to give a pony a bath. This is an experience they will
NEVER forget. The kids will have a blast.
Around 2:15 we will take another ride. The first day or so the kids will only be asked to walk or trot if they are comfortable. We will start off again in the round pen with a lung line attached to the horses so I have full control.
I figure by 4:30 or so we should be wrapping things up and getting the horses unsaddled. The kids will help put away tack and give grain to the horses and see that they have water again.
Some kids will need to stay the extra hour and they will be able to help do feedings and hang around the other farm animals. I am sure the other animals will enjoy the extra attention. The kids will get hands on what it is like living on a farm.
On Fridays
Your kids can be dropped off at 8:00 am. Then around 9:00 am we will gather the horses and groom and saddle up. We will move into a small arena and work on seeing how well each child does and find the right horse for them for the horse show. At times during the show the kids will ride the same horse. The kids will practice the events they learned all week.
Around 11:30 we will dismount and put the horses away in there holding pens and get ready for lunch. Cow Poke Pony Camp will provide pizza for the kids. The kids will help gather the horses up around 1:30 and get ready for small horse show to show parents what they learned all week. The horse show will start around 2:30. We will give ribbons 1st through 6th place. The events will be timed and ribbons will be given accordingly. I give out two special awards, one to the most improved child for riding and one to the one child that helps out the most during the whole week.
On horse show day we will do 4 of the events the kids practiced on during the whole week. The kids will be told what events will be done that morning.
If for any reason a child is not ready ride to by themselves for the horse show, he/she might need a parent to help hand lead them around. I would rather each child learn how to rein the horse then worry about the speed. Learning how to control a horse is much more important then how fast one can go. If your child doesn't take direction well and tries to do what they want instead of what is being asked of them. We will not allow them to ride alone during the show. I will insist they do lead line only by a parent holding a lead rope. I care more about safety of the rider then anything. A child with out control is an accident waiting to happen and that will not happen on my watch. I take my riding very seriously.
We will allow plenty of time for the kids to take pictures on the horses with them holding their ribbons before putting them away. We will then unsaddle and put away the horses after the show.
If your child only comes to the day camp (for one day only) and it's just a Friday. They will only be allowed to do lead line for the horse show unless your child takes some private lessons with me prior to that camp day. No Exceptions! Its not fair to the kids that were there the whole week.
The kids will be able to leave any time after the horses show.
The kids will get at least 2 hours of riding time each day and about 2 1/2 on Fridays. I try to make riding the # 1 activity. We only do about 1 hour of crafts and the rest is learning grooming, saddling, mounting, dismounting, riding at a walk, trot and a canter if the child is ready.
